Mansfield University... Developing Tomorrow's Leaders New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

Mansfield University Orientation Process

Sponsored by the MU Student Government Association

As a new Mansfield University Student it is important that you follow ALL the steps below:

Step 1

Understanding what Orientation is:

The journey begins at the base of the mountain... it is our mission, through New Student Orientation and New Student Welcome, to provide you, as MOUNTAINEERS, the tools, resources, and support necessary to make your voyage successful. You as students will be successful if you understand the expectations of being a college student. You must know how to get involved, how to meet new people, when and where to get advising, how to select your courses, and how to understand some of the issues you might face as you enter the Mansfield University Family.

What is Orientation and what do you need to know to get started?

  • Orientation is a program designed to facilitate your success. You will learn a lot about campus and our campus resources, meet new students, faculty, and staff, get your schedule, take placement testing (if applicable), and get your student ID.
  • Orientation is a one day program, the fee is covered completely by our Student Government Association.
  • Orientation will start around 7:30 am in the morning and end between 4:15 and 5:15 pm. The agenda is available along the right hand side of the page. Please note there is an agenda for First Year Students and one for Transfer Students.
  • Students must register online to attend an orientation. Please follow all the steps below.
  • Spring and Fall Orientation, for both New Students and Transfer Students, will be held on the same date. See step 3 for Orientation dates.
  • Overnight options are not available on-campus for Spring Orientation.  However for Fall Orientation an overnight option is available at a fee of $30 per person in our on-campus suite style housing the evening before your orientation date. See step 5 for more info and to register for an overnight stay (your Orientation registration does NOT include your overnight stay, a separate registration MUST be completed).
  • The institution is under construction therefore some of our breakout session spaces will be a tight fit for all participants, please limit the number of individuals and items you bring with you to Orientation. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Step 2

Understanding your options:

Participation in an Orientation is mandatory*.

Mansfield University is committed to your success as a student, and Orientation will provide you with the tools, resources, and support necessary to be successful. Orientation is funded by your Student Government Association.

As a New Student (attending college for the first time) and as a Transfer Student (transferring from another institution), you may select between a few different Fall Orientation Dates.  These dates are a one day orientation with an optional overnight.

Each session has a capacity that, once reached, will not be exceeded, so enroll as soon as possible.

Please note: The institution is under construction therefore some of our breakout session spaces will be a tight fit for all participants, please limit the number of individuals and items you bring with you to Orientation. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Understanding Testing:

During Orientation those students who are required to take an English placement exam and/or a Math placement exam will be given the appropriate time to do so. Both of the placement exams are mandatory if you are required to test. The exams are web-based.

If you have already taken a college-level Math and/or English course, you would be exempt from taking either or both of these tests. It is important that you request that an official transcript be sent to the admissions office from the college you took the course. AP scores will need to be sent to the admissions office by July.

For more information on testing please contact your admissions counselor at 570-662-4243 or our placement testing supervisor at 570-662-4636.

English Placement:

  • You are allotted 60 minutes to complete a 300-600 word essay.
  • You are given the essay topic at the start of the exam.
  • Your results will be disseminated to you upon completion of the exam.

Math Placement:

  • You are allotted 30 minutes to complete the exam.
  • There is a Math Placement Exam Practice Test available on our website: This practice test was created by our Math Department faculty and shows the solutions to the problems. This test should be used for study purposes and to help you prepare for taking the exam.
  • Calculators are not permitted during the test.

Mansfield University is committed to supplying appropriate accommodations.  Should you need academic/testing accommodations, please contact the placement testing supervisor prior to your designated Orientation date at 570-662-4636.
