Santa's
Gift Bag

2013 Report

Every year as the holidays approach, Mansfield University, under the leadership of the United Campus Ministry office, facilitates a program called Santa's Gift Bag. Through this program we offer assistance to local families who need help providing Christmas gifts for their child (or children). After receiving a letter from our office, these families provide us with information to pass on to sponsors who shop for presents for the children. With the assistance of community members and our local Mansfield Fire Department, the gifts are packed and ready for pick-up or delivery several days before Christmas.

Gifts were provided for 125 children, ranging in age from newborn -18. These 125 children were from 53 families. All of the children are students at a Mansfield school(Mansfield High, Miller Elementary, New Covenant Academy), a member of an area day care center or a sibling of one of the above.

Gifts were provided for 61 Females and 64 Males.
The age breakdown of the gift recipients was:
Ages: 0-4: 26 gift recipients
5-9: 50 gift recipients
10-13: 31 gift recipients
14-18: 18 gift recipients

None of this would have been possible without our wonderful SPONSORS
and generous COMMUNITY SUPPORT!

Ours sponsors came from both the university and the community. Students, faculty, staff, community members and businesses were all sponsors.

Below is a breakdown of those who helped sponsor a child, children, family or families this year.

MU STUDENTS:
7 Resident Assistants (RA's) representing every MU Residence Hall were able to sponsor children.
7 student organizations sponsored one or more children.
17 individual students sponsored children.
4 sports teams were sponsors.
We estimate that a minimum of 300 MU students participated this year.
MU FACULTY/STAFF:
24 individual faculty and staff helped with many taking 2 or more kids.
5 Departments helped by sponsoring 13 children.
We estimate that over 50 faculty and staff participated.

We had help from several other areas at Mansfield University. Mansfield University Student Life helped by packing children's bags. The MU Campus Bookstore donated stuffed animals and the Facilities Department donated children's toys (Special thanks to Donna Emmick!)

We received generous monetary donations from Cynthia Keller, Tammy and John Felondis, Clifford and Marilyn Wiles, North Hall Employees (Thanks to Jamey Harris for organizing that effort!), Administration and Finance Employees (Thanks to Nancy Parrillo for her help!) and the MU Men's and Women's Basketball Game attendees (Thanks to Steve McCloskey for coordinating that!).

COMMUNITY:
Members of the Mansfield Chapter of Kiwanis not only sponsored children, but once again helped us transport gifts to the fire hall and pack children's gift bags.

Mansfield Pizza Hut donated gift certificates which were given to our families. Indigo Wireless in Wellsboro sponsored children. Mansfield Pump and Pantry sold raffle tickets and donated the money earned to us. RE/MAX First in Mansfield donated toys and Holy Child Catholic Church supported us by sponsoring 5 families for its Wishing Tree. The Laurel Doll Club of Pennsylvania and Wal-Mart gave us generous monetary donations.

A Special Thanks goes out to:
-Mansfield High School, Warren L. Miller Elementary School, New Covenant Academy and the area day cares for helping us get letters out to families and in some cases, collecting letters for us too.
-Colleen Devine and everyone at the MU Post Office for coordinating a wrapping paper and gift supplies drive and for helping us transport gifts to the fire hall.
-The Community Churches in Mansfield who make and fill a stocking for each child. Thanks to Carol Wooley for coordinating this effort!
-Partners in Progress who provide hats and gloves for each child. Thanks to Irene Morgan for leading this effort!
-The Mansfield Volunteer Fire Association who allow us to use the fire hall for several days. Special thanks to Deb Freeman, Arlene Welch and our delivery crew!
-Joe and Maryann Maresco for all the support they provide year after year.
-Deborah Casey for all her help, support and generous donations.
-and last, but certainly not least, thanks to Allison Fehlinger, our amazing and wonderful student worker! Without her help, SGB would not have come together so smoothly or been so organized!

THANK YOU to every single person who helped whether big or small!
This program would not be possible without the help we receive from each and every one of you!!!

Thanks again for making Santa's Gift Bag 2013 such a success!

In gratitude,
Courtney Hull
